Black, Beautiful & Ignored

In an effort to delve deeper into black women's spending habits and their experience when it comes to purchasing cosmetics and other beauty products, Essence Magazine has created a four-part Smart Beauty Panel. For their inaugural panel in 2009, they invited Sam Fine, celebrity makeup artist, Mikki Taylor, Essence's beauty and cover editor , Rosemarie Ingleton and Candace Corlet, president of WSL Strategic Research to put together their thoughts and findings. The panel discussed some very disturbing statistics:

African-American women spend $7.5 billion annually on beauty products, but shell out 80 percent more money on cosmetics and twice as much on skin care products than the general market, according to the research. That difference comes as African-American women sample many more products to find the ones that are most effective on their skin.

“She spends a lot, but there’s little satisfaction. What keeps us buying is the hope that this product will do what it’s supposed to do,” said Sam Fine.

Yes, you read that correctly: black women spend 7.5 billion dollars each year to an industry that generally ignores their largest spending group. Why is that?

Coming across this fact is what inspired the conception of KARIF, regardless of whatever the answer might be. As a beauty subscription service, we want to remove three major elements from what we like to call "the Beauty Product Acquistion" process for black women:

1. Eliminate the risk of blindly purchasing  a beauty product that you don't know will fully work on you.

2. Minimize the likelihood of erroneously spending money on products that do not function.

3. Maximize your exposure to products  created by women of color, for women of color, to ensure that you are receiving products that are made with your specific complexion, skin type or personality in mind.

We saw the problem and we are working hard to bring you a solution.  Our founders represent the great majority of you: We are women of color tired of the guessing game and subsequent failures we are subjected to when it comes to choosing the best and most effective beauty products.  That's why we've decided to create a beauty subscription service which your needs at the forefront.  KARIF is the story of us, and we want you to be part of it!
